چکیده

Cerebral blindness is defined as bilateral loss of vision secondary to disruption in the visual pathways posterior to the lateral geniculate nuclei [1]. Cortical blindness, a particular type of cerebral blindness, is defined as the total loss of vision in the presence of normal pupillary reflexes and in the absence of ophthalmological disease [2], resulting from bilateral lesions of the striate cortex in the occipital lobes [1].

Transient post-traumatic cortical blindness due to bilateral occipital lobe infarcts in a multiply-injured patient: A case report

Cortical blindness as a sequelae of trauma has been reported in the literature but its pathophysiology remains unknown. We report a case of transient post-traumatic cortical blindness as a result of bilateral occipital lobe infarcts in a multiply injured patient after a 6-storey fall from height. We discuss the possible aetiologies for our patient’s condition and reviewed the relevant literatur...

Cortical Blindness due to Bilateral Occipital Infarcts in a Renal Failure Patient with Prostate Cancer: A Rare Complication of Hemodialysis

Loss of vision is a rare complication seen in hemodialysis patients. It is thought to develop because of the hypotension that can be observed during dialysis. This paper involves a patient with acute loss of vision during hemodialysis due to bilateral occipital infarcts.

Anton’s Syndrome following Callosal Disconnection

Anosognosia for cortical blindness, also called Anton's syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder usually following bilateral lesions to occipital cortices. Neuropsychological, morphological and functional neuroimaging (SPECT and fMRI) findings are reported in a patient who incurred Anton's syndrome after an ischaemic lesion confined to the left occipital lobe involving the corpus callosum. The...

Imagery without perception--a case study of anosognosia for cortical blindness.

A patient with complete cortical blindness after bilateral posterior cerebral artery infarctions denied her blindness. Her pretended visual experiences could frequently be traced back to synaesthetic translations of acoustic or tactile perceptions into mental visual images. Possibly, the belief to see resulted from a confusion of mental visual images with real percepts. The patient manifested p...

Anton's Syndrome due to Bilateral Ischemic Occipital Lobe Strokes

We present a case of a patient with Anton's syndrome (i.e., visual anosognosia with confabulations), who developed bilateral occipital lobe infarct. Bilateral occipital brain damage results in blindness, and patients start to confabulate to fill in the missing sensory input. In addition, the patient occasionally becomes agitated and talks to himself, which indicates that, besides Anton's syndro...
